About Central Birmingham
Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands county of England, and, with a population of over 1 030 000 inhabitants, it is the most populous British city outside London. Its residents are known as the "Brummies", a term derived from the city's nickname of "Brum", which may originate from the its dialect name, Brummagem, believed to have been derived from one of the city's earlier names, "Bromwicham".
Due to the fact that it was the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in England, Birmingham is also known as "the workshop of the world" or the "city of a thousand trades". Besides being a national commercial centre, being named as the second-best place in the United Kingdom to locate a business, Birmingham is also a national hub for conferences, retail and events, and it is the fourth-most visited city by foreign visitors in the UK, as well, having the second-largest city economy in the UK, and often being referred to as the Second City.
Over the last century, Birmingham has had a vibrant and varied musical history and made a major contribution to the musical culture of the United Kingdom, being often described as the birthplace of heavy metal music, with Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Magnum and two members of Led Zeppelin being local.
